Bond Rating Agencies

Standard and Poor's
Standard & Poor's maintains ratings on more than 300 Canadian companies, governments, and public agencies. They have been rating Canadian conventional-term debt and general-obligation bonds since August 1949, when the sovereign rating was assigned.

Dominion Bond Rating Service
Dominion Bond Rating Service (DBRS) was formed in 1976 to rate issuers of commercial paper in Canada and subsequently expanded its coverage to include issuers of bonds and preferred shares in the Canadian marketplace.

Moody’s Investors Service
Moody's Investors Service was incorporated in 1914 and is primarily focused on US bond issues.

Learning Sites

The Investor Learning Centre (ILC)
Established in 1996, the ILC is Canada’s only independent not-for-profit organization solely dedicated to providing non-promotional investment information to the general public. It is funded through revenues from its low-cost programs, publication sales and by a grant from the Canadian Securities Institute.  Their section entitled "Investments 101 Course" is a good place to start for a general overview.

A US site with a range of bond material from basics to advanced put together by The Bond Market Association. The Bond Market Association is the industry’s trade group and represents securities firms and banks that underwrite, trade and sell debt securities, both domestically and internationally.

SmartMoney’s Bond Centre
A US site run by the publishers of Smart Money magazine, their bond centre provides everything from news about the bond market to bond education to bond calculators.

Canada Investment and Savings
This is a Government of Canada site providing descriptions and updates of Canada Savings Bonds, Canada Premium Bonds and useful tools such as calculators.
